Export to Afghanistan: petitions by sugar mills: ministry asked to respond
The Lahore High Court here on Friday sought a reply from the ministry of commerce and trade by September 27 in response to petitions of nine sugar mills challenging a ban on export of sugar to Afghanistan through land route.
Earlier, the counsel for Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) stated before the court that the ban was imposed on February 07, 2013 through an SRO which was later approved by the federal cabinet. He said that ban was imposed to control black marketing of sugar.
The counsel further stated that the ministry had paid Rs 8 billion to sugar mills as a subsidy. The FBR’s counsel pointed out that the ministry of commerce and trade should have been made a necessary party to these petitions but the petitioners did not do so.
The court therefore asked the petitioners’ counsel to add the ministry to the list of respondents and issued notice to it.
