A training workshop on “Orchard management and Post harvest process” held at Agriculture Research Institute (ARI) Mingora, Swat, in which farmers from Lower and Upper Dir participated. A total of 300 small farmers from Upper and Lower Dir district along with agriculture experts participated in two different trainings, aimed at to improve orchard management techniques and to enhance their capacities of increasing quality of products.

The programme would help to improve the livelihood and income generation capacity of small growers of the two districts, said in a press release issued by Malakand Development Program (MDP). The district administration in collaboration with agriculture department organised two separate trainings on “orchard growing and management” and “post harvest process” for those farmers of Lower and Upper Dir, who were registered with Farm Service Centres (FSCs).

The training included lectures, practical sessions and field exposure visits conducted by agriculture experts from Agriculture Research Institute (ARI), Swat. In the orchard growing training session, the growers were trained in a range of aspects such as orchard management and planning, layout, soil testing, irrigation, use of fertiliser, pests and diseases of apple, peaches, persimmon and walnuts, pesticide and its control for better management of horticultural crop orchards.
